WE ARE A SMALL POLYCULTURE HOMESTEAD LOCATED IN ELIZABETH, COLORADO.
What does Sobre Zaltana mean?
With an unusual name, we are often asked what Sobre Zaltana means. With this, of course, comes a story… We moved to Colorado from Michigan in 2006 and then started our ranch when we lived on 41 acres in Castle Rock in 2010. Coming from Michigan, we had gardens that were fairly easy to grow. Our first garden in Colorado proved to be very different and much more difficult… which shouldn’t be too big of a surprise considering we were at 7000 feet.
With naming our ranch, we wanted something different, but with meaning. We felt that in the area we are, there is a bit of both Spanish and Native American influence, so we choose to use a combination of the two dialects.
Sobre translated in Spanish is “On top of” and Zaltana translated in Native American is “Mountain”.
In all honesty, the translation was originally supposed to be “Ranch On Top of High Mountain”… but somehow that whole “Ranch” part got dismissed.
Now… anyone who visits or lives by us will realize that we certainly are not even remotely on top of a mountain. But, as mentioned above, relative to where we came from – it certainly did feel like it when we first started out here!
Our Values and Mission…
We have strategically chosen to build our ranch with more of a homestead mentality.
We believe that God created an amazing system – a system that works,
that we prefer to take advantage of rather than work around or against.
BETTER THAN ORGANIC
Rather than relying on a broken governmental certification program, you can rely on our word. We do not use growth hormones, unnecessary antibiotics, herbicides, etc.
Our animals are raised on pasture, with plenty of space to roam, consuming a diet that they were built for, absent of fillers and garbage. They are offered a variety of minerals and supplements free choice so that they are able to take what they need rather than being force fed unnecessary extras. They are also loved and cared for to ensure that they have a good life while they are with us.
Our produce is grown without any artificial fertilizers or additives. We start with non-gmo, heirloom seed (most organic) and use only the most natural methods of growing.
POLYCULTURE / PERMACULTURE
We have chosen to embrace a variety of species on our ranch, taking advantage of the symbiotic relationships that were created between them rather than specializing in one or two. We appreciate that when you have a variety of livestock, the cattle, horses, sheep, goats, pigs, chickens, ducks, and geese ALL eat a different part of the pasture. We embrace the cycle of livestock producing manure that turns to compost to feed our garden. We work on building up our soil and pastures to provide the best nutrition for our livestock and produce. There are so many naturally occurring beneficial relationships that are disregarded in a monoculture
HERITAGE / HEIRLOOM
As a general rule, we raise heritage breed livestock and grow heirloom produce. Heritage livestock are breeds that were traditionally raised in the US prior to industrialized agriculture. These breeds were developed over time to be sustainable, not dependent on artificial breeding, human rearing, and excessive medications.
Heirloom produce is based on the very same concept – growing plants that have been established over time and can propagate naturally. They don’t require any specific treatment or spray, but they are built to last in the right environment. They have not been genetically modified and no specific corporation or individual owns the rights to them.
Our mission is to sustainably provide a variety of food and additional items to a small number of local families, while also inviting them into community, involvement, education, and awareness.
About Us, Personally…
We love God, each other, spending time as a family, and life! We enjoy nature and being outside, our pets and our growing collection of livestock (pretty much just all animals in general), gardening, going to the zoo, games, dancing, music, being hospitable, working hard, striving for sustainability, being healthy and active, homeschooling, laughing, cooking & baking from scratch and striving (but often time failing) for excellence in all we do. Most importantly, we hope to leave a legacy for our generations of family to come.
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters” (Colossians 3:23)
“…rejoice in all the good things the Lord your God has given to you and your household.” (Deuteronomy 26:11)

SHOP SOBRE ZALTANA
Sobre Zaltana products are exclusively distributed through All Things Homestead. We believe this is a great way for you to purchase our offerings since you will be given the opportunity to pick up at our farm, or a number of additional areas along the front range.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN FEED
We also distribute a number of livestock feeds, products, and more under the name Rocky Mountain Feed. We separated this division of our business in order to clearly represent the products we simply distribute vs. what we actually grow and produce on our farm.
INTERESTED IN BEING A PART OF OUR FARM?
We offer a “Farm Share” program for those who are interested in more than just buying a few items. This gives you an opportunity to reap all the benefits of having your own farm… without the real estate and full time work!
